CPAWS Southern Alberta

by Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society

The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is Canada’s only nationwide environmental charity dedicated solely to the protection of our public land and water, and ensuring our parks are managed to protect the nature within them. To put this in perspective, more than 90 per cent of Canada consists of public land and water. We now have 13 chapters across the country. The CPAWS Southern Alberta chapter was established in 1967, just four years after the national organization, in response to commercial development pressures in Banff National Park. Today, we work with Albertans to establish and protect parks and wilderness areas from Red Deer south to the Alberta border. We worked to protect well known areas such as Kananaskis, The Whaleback and the Castle Wilderness. We also offer environmental education in the classroom and interpretive hikes in nature to foster a new generation of environmental stewardship.
