Wheels of Hope: Reaching the Unreachable in Kiundila

by Bright Lights for Africa Foundation

Help Us Reach the Unreachable — One Motorcycle, Eleven Villages

Bright Lights for Africa Foundation (BLFA) is a charitable, non-profit organization operating in both Canada and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We empower marginalized communities by addressing critical needs, fostering resilience, and promoting self-sufficiency.

In Canada, our work centers on supporting Francophones of African descent in Calgary and surrounding areas through culturally sensitive programs that break systemic barriers, enhance well-being, and create pathways to long-term success.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), we partner with vulnerable, rural, and conflict-affected communities — especially women and youth — to expand access to education, economic opportunity, leadership development, and community resilience.

Our work is guided by one core belief: When people are seen, supported, and empowered, communities thrive.

Why Musenge?

Musenge is more than a village — it is the headquarters of Kiundila, serving as the administrative, economic, and humanitarian center for 11 remote rural communities in Walikale Territory, North Kivu.

With nearly 2,000 residents, Musenge anchors vital services in governance, education, health, commerce, and houses the BLFA volunteer center — the heart of our outreach across Kiundila.

But for decades, Musenge and its surrounding villages have remained physically cut off due to conflict, displacement, and a complete lack of infrastructure.

In early 2025, renewed violence displaced millions — including families from Musenge, who fled into the mountains without access to communication, healthcare, or aid. Today, as communities return home, they face the same challenge: isolation.

Why a Motorcycle? Why Now?

No paved roads
No public transportation
No vehicles servicing the region
Only narrow footpaths — through hills, forests, rivers, and former conflict zones
Even bicycles are unusable in this landscape. The terrain is unstable, eroded, and often impassable — making mobility a daily struggle.

In 2024 alone, BLFA volunteers walked over 1,800 kilometers on foot — carrying school kits, food, healthcare supplies, and leading empowerment sessions across all 11 villages.

These journeys are:

Physically exhausting
Unsafe and unpredictable

Time-consuming — limiting our program’s reach and impact

A motorcycle is not a luxury — it is essential.

It is the only safe and realistic way to:

Reach all 11 villages consistently

Deliver critical support faster

Protect our volunteer teams

The Vision: One Motorcycle. Eleven Villages. Thousands Impacted.

Wheels of Hope is a grassroots campaign to raise $3500 CAD to purchase a rugged, off-road motorcycle for the Bright Lights For Africa Foundation (BLFA) volunteer team based in Musenge — the heart of Kiundila.

With your support, we will:

Acquire a high-quality motorcycle designed for challenging terrain

Enable faster, safer travel for volunteers to reach distant villages

Reduce delivery times for school kits, food, health supplies, and emergency aid

Expand outreach to reach more children, women, and youth

Strengthen real-time responsiveness to community needs

Empower the Musenge-based BLFA volunteer center to scale its impact across Kiundila

Why This Matters

In Kiundila, every hour saved means a child learns sooner.

Every kilometer reduced means a volunteer reaches another village.

Every trip completed means a woman or girl is no longer left behind.

Without transportation, our volunteers’ work is delayed, limited, and exhausting.

Join Us — Fuel the Mission. Power the Journey.

By supporting Wheels of Hope, you’re not just funding transportation — You’re breaking isolation, protecting frontline volunteers, and delivering hope where it’s needed most.

We’re not just looking for donors — We’re calling on investors in humanity who believe that no one should be unreachable simply because of where they live.

Be the reason our team walks less and serves more.
Be the engine of change.
