The Writers' Guild of Alberta strives to make our program accessible to writers all across the province, regardless of their financial situation. When possible, we provide bursaries for writers who wish to participate in our programs but are in financial difficulty.
Some programs we have provided bursaries for include:
- Our most popular program, WordsWorth summer camp for young writers ages 12 – 19, which is held annually at Kamp Kiwanis. WordsWorth provides an immersive experience with writing classes exploring a diversity of genres and forms, plus outdoor camp activities. Participants have experienced growth in both their writing skills and personal development, and our bursary fund allows young writers in financial need to access this valuable experience.
- As part of our efforts to integrate the next generation of writers into our community, our bursary fund has allowed for post-secondary students to attend our annual conferences for free or at a reduced cost. We have also offered bursaries to other participants who demonstrate financial need.
- Our annual writing retreats at The Banff Centre and Strawberry Creek Lodge offer valuable writing time as well as the opportunity to connect with other writers. Due to rising costs, many writers require bursaries in order to access this opportunity to focus entirely on writing.
The support of donors is more important than ever if we are to be able to continue to provide financial support for writers in need and keep our programs accessible.
