Bright Lights for Africa Foundation (BLFA) is a charitable, non-profit organization operating in both Canada and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We empower marginalized communities by addressing critical needs, fostering resilience, and promoting self-sufficiency.

In Canada, our work centers on supporting Francophones of African descent in Calgary and surrounding areas through culturally sensitive programs that break systemic barriers, enhance well-being, and create pathways to long-term success.

Our work is guided by one core belief: When people are seen, supported, and empowered, communities thrive.

Why This Matters

Every child deserves to start the school year with confidence — yet for many families in Calgary’s Afrodescendant Francophone communities, even the basics like school supplies remain out of reach. Poverty, cultural isolation, and limited support continue to prevent children from fully engaging in school and reaching their potential.

That’s why the Education Support – Back-to-School Kit initiative exists:
To remove barriers, restore dignity, and ensure that every child begins the school year equipped, empowered, and ready to thrive.

Our Impact So Far

Since launching our Back-to-School Kit initiative, Bright Lights For Africa Foundation has made a tangible difference in the lives of Afrodescendant Francophone families in Calgary and surrounding areas

100 children supported in 2024 — each received full school kits with backpacks, supplies, calculators, and essentials.
One joyful community event — our Back-to-School Family Bash brought families together for music, food, and fun.
A celebration of dignity and inclusion — children felt proud, prepared, and supported as they returned to school.
More than supplies — this initiative promotes confidence, equity, and a stronger sense of belonging.

In 2024, we supported 100 children through the Back-to-School Kit program. Families left empowered, and children returned to school prepared and proud.

Our Goal for 2025

This year, we aim to support 130 children across Calgary and surrounding areas with full Back-to-School Kits — and we need to raise $10,000 CAD to make it possible.

Provide 130 full Back-to-School Kits: Each kit includes backpacks, notebooks, pencils, calculators, and school essentials for children aged 6–17.
Promote equity, dignity, and academic success: By removing barriers and creating spaces where every child feels seen, supported, and celebrated.
What This Means for Our Community

Children will start the school year equipped and confident. They will feel included, proud of their identity, and excited to learn. Most importantly, they will know their community believes in their potential.
